Michigan House Cafe & Brewpub is located in the heart of Historic Downtown Calumet across the street from the Vertin Building - the new home of Miskwabic Ed Gray Studio, Abbey Art Glass Studio, and an ever growing list of other artists. The Sixth and Oak intersection is also conveniently located two blocks from snowmobile trails and Swedetown ski trails, and 11 miles from Mt. Bohemia. The street level offers a full service restaurant and a vintage pub. Overnight lodging is available on the second floor (once the Hotel Michigan) with two suites that have been rehabilitated in historic fashion. Red Jacket Brewing Company, Michigan's newest Brewpub, is beginning operation on the ground floor as well - following the historic Bosch Brewing tradition.
The Michigan House Hotel and Buffet has occupied this corner of 6th and Oak since at least1893 according to newspaper records of the time. It was the Anglo-American Hotel in 1893; the Fox and Everts saloon on the ground floor of the building was known as "Michigan House". Bosch Brewing razed that structure in 1905 and erected the present building during that year. Bosch built several fine establishments to market their brew to area patrons in the Upper Peninsula, which is also know as the U.P...
The Michigan House Cafe has a large ceiling mural created by the Milwaukee Artist's Association depicting a happy brew-filled picnic and dated l906. Some historians felt the Michigan House was the only establishment built near the Calumet Theatre and in the Keweenaw that offered a restaurant, bar, and hotel.. Stop by the next time you are in the Keweenaw National Park area and enjoy great food, beer, and beverages in an historic establishment.
